Spire Leeds offers ‘next generation’ liposuction treatment
Patients can walk away with a sculpted body in a matter of hours thanks to a sophisticated new liposuction technique available at Spire Leeds hospital.
The procedure, called Body Jet, is offered by Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay. It involves the surgeon making a small incision in the patient’s skin following a local anaesthetic. A thin tube, called a cannula, is then inserted, and through this, a jet of water is sprayed under the skin to loosen unwanted fat cells. These are then gently sucked away. The technique can be repeated on different areas of the body that need sculpting.
Body Jet offers a range of benefits over traditional liposuction. The patient, who can be awake during the procedure, may be able to view the results during the treatment and work with the surgeon to create the desired look. Because only a local anaesthetic is usually required, there is often no need for an overnight stay in hospital. Perhaps the biggest benefit of all is that Body Jet liposuction causes only minimal bruising and swelling, meaning that recovery is rapid.
Bride-to-be Noelie Klineberg, 39, a farm manager and entrepreneur from near Doncaster, decided to try the Body Jet technique. She had noticed a build-up of fat on her bottom which no diet would shift. With her wedding day approaching, she wanted to look her best. Having previously had cosmetic treatments carried out at Spire Leeds, Noelie decided to try Body Jet liposuction. She said:
“When I found I couldn’t get into my jeans any more, I knew I had to do something. I felt like my bottom didn’t match the rest of my body, and no diet I tried worked. It’s really important to me to look great for my wedding next year, so I decided to try the Body Jet. The treatment itself was quick and easy, and I could see the results immediately. Within three days, I was back in my old jeans. I’m now a ‘perfect 10’ and feel like a new person.”
Professor Simon Kay, who carried out Noelie’s liposuction, commented: “Body Jet offers patients some big advantages. It is much more precise, involves less scarring and results in a faster recovery than traditional liposuction techniques. Hips, thighs, buttocks, arms and chins are particularly popular areas for re-shaping.”
New treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration at Spire Leeds Hospital
The IOL-VIP system
Spire Leeds Hospital has launched a new treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration - the IOL-VIP system (intra-ocular lens for visually impaired people).
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in people over the age of 55 in the UK.
The macular (the central area of retina responsible for reading and detailed vision) is susceptible to degeneration as we age. Although mild AMD causes few symptoms, progression leads to devastating central visual loss - restricting a person's ability to read, drive and recognise faces.
There are two main forms of AMD - wet and dry. About 90% of people have the dry form of the disease. Historically there has been no effective treatment for most of these patients however the new IOL-VIP treatment can significantly improve central vision.
The procedure involves standard catract extraction, followed by the implantation of two high power intraocular lenses, one behind and one in front of the iris. Together these lenses act like a telescope, slightly magnifying the image and diverting it to a healthier part of the retina. The healthy retina takes over the tole of the macular and can give considerably improved vision.
At Spire Leeds, the service is led by consultant opthalmologist Mr Tim Dabbs.
Spire Leeds Hospital appears in Best magazine
Best magazine features weight-loss patient from Spire Leeds Hospital

The national weekly magazine Best, recently featured an article on a patient who underwent gastric bypass surgery at Spire Leeds Hospital. The article, published on Tuesday 14 October followed the story of Paul Manku.
When consultant weight-loss surgeon Stephen Pollard of Spire Leeds Hospital performed a gastric bypass operation on Paul Manku, his patient weighed over 45 stone, and with a BMI of around 100 was one of the heaviest patients that Mr Pollard had operated on.
It all began with a car accident. Paul had always found weight control difficult, but when his legs were crushed between two cars in an accident in 1993, he was unable to do any sport for several months – a difficult adjustment for someone who had been very active and even played hockey at Northern Premier League level. He found that the weight was piling on.
This continued over the years, and, by the age of 40, he weighed 50 stone. Despite going to the gym and swimming fairly regularly, Paul was unable to make significant progress. His motivation was gradually ebbing away, and he was beginning to fear the more serious health problems that would inevitably occur as he got older - read more
Spire Leeds Hospital has introduced a ‘mentoring’ scheme, giving patients the opportunity to speak with someone who has had a similar operation in the past.
As consultant gynaecologist Martin Griffith-Jones explains, the reassurance patients receive from speaking to a mentor could help speed up the recovery process:
“The mentoring scheme at Spire Leeds Hospital is an excellent idea. Patients don’t always know what to expect when they first come in, and speaking to a mentor provides a useful insight into important issues such as likely discomfort levels and recovery time. This helps put the patient in a positive frame of mind which means they are more likely to make a good recovery.”
One of Mr Griffith-Jones’ recent patients, Shirley Twissell (above), had a hysterectomy at the hospital in June this year and decided to help others by becoming a mentor:
“I joined the scheme because I think it’s helpful for people who come in for an operation to be able to speak to someone who has already been through the experience. There might be questions the patient wants to ask but would feel silly mentioning to a doctor or nurse, or maybe something they don’t understand. A mentor can explain things in a way that the patient relates to, and it’s just incredibly reassuring for them to see that you’ve come through it fine.”
New treatment for back pain
Patients who are suffering from contained disc herniations that have not responded to the more traditional forms of conservative management such as physiotherapy, injections or medication can now benefit from the 'nucleoplasty' procedure.
The procedure involves partially removing the nucleus of a disc, which subsequently leads to symptom relief. Performed using x-ray guidance with local anaesthetic and sedation, the procedure usually takes less than an hour.
Patients need to be assessed for suitability. In carefully selected patients, success rates for nucleoplasty are about 80 percent. The procedure often avoids or delays the need for open surgery in the future.
Nucleoplasty is performed by consultants in pain management, Dr Karen Simpson, Dr Ganesan Baranidharan and Dr Diana Dickson.
